Krewe De Paws of Olde Towne Royal Ball : Under new leadership and a new attitude, the old "Krewe De Paws" is now called "Krewe De Paws of Olde Towne", celebrating the namesake of the Olde Towne section of Slidell where they parade. This non-profit organization holds many fundraisers for various animal related charities throughout the year. Things culminate with the annual "Royal Ball" and ultimately the parade itself, which will roll on February 2nd, 2013. This year's theme is "Fais Deaux Dawgs" and special guest, internationally known musician (from right here in St. Tammany Parish!) Amanda Shaw will reign as Grand Marshal! More information can be found at www.facebook.com/KreweDePawsOfOldeTowne or check out www.cafedubone.com. The 2013 Royal Ball was held January 14th at Andrew's Restaurant and Bar in Slidell. Natchez Trace Parkway : The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444 mile Federal highway that runs from Natchez Mississippi to Nashville Tennessee. The original trace, paralleled by this modern highway, has served many purposes over the years; one of those being a route back to the northeast upon which farmers who, after floating their crops to New Orleans, sold their flatboats for lumber and used this route to get back home. There are centuries old Indian mounds, cemeteries, waterfalls, and historic buildings along the way. Should you decide to travel along this route, here are some things to consider: The speed limit is 50 mph on 95% of this road. It drops to 40 in the extreme upper portion near the terminus in Tennessee. I did run across one park ranger who was running radar. From what I have heard, since this is a federal highway, the ticket may be a federal issue and cost big $$ so be careful. There is one gas station on the highway (ironically it was closed when I passed it), no hotels, no food or convenience stores so plan accordingly. You are not completely cut off from civilization as there are entrances and exits to towns along the way, but there are some long stretches where you are a long way from services. Give yourself two full days to get the most out of it. I need to go back to the northernmost section to finish seeing everything I wanted to see. For me day 1 was Natchez to Tupelo and day 2 was Tupelo to Nashville. I didn't give myself enough time to see everything in the north (which to me is the most beautiful part). If you are easily bored you may find this drive somewhat of a torture after awhile, but if you get out and do some exploring it is well worth the time.

Brogan's Run 2011 : Brogan Burns is my brave little cousin who is battling Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy, and events like this help raise awareness and funds to find a cure for this disease. Thanks to all who came out and supported this event and we are looking forward to seeing everyone at Brogan's Run 2012. Donations are greatly appreciated and can be accepted at www.parentprojectmd.org/brogansrun. What is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy? Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births (about 20,000 new cases each year). Because the Duchenne gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects boys; however, it occurs across all races and cultures. Duchenne results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin. Because dystrophin is absent, the muscle cells are easily damaged. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs. Young men with Duchenne typically live into their late twenties. Becker muscular dystrophy, which is less severe than Duchenne, occurs when dystrophin is manufactured, but not in the normal form or amount. Because of this disparity in the severity of the different forms of these disorders, we will refer primarily to Duchenne throughout this site. Duchenne can be passed from parent to child, but approximately 35% of cases occur because of a random spontaneous mutation. In other words, it can affect anyone. Although there are medical treatments that may help slow its progression, there is currently no cure for Duchenne.

Mary Payton: Miracles Can Happen Benefit 2011 : Mary Payton’s Miracle Foundation was formed in March of 2008 in honor of Mary Payton Vigil, a resident of Mandeville, Louisiana. Mary Payton is a beautiful 5 year old girl who was diagnosed at the end of January 2008 with Late Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (LINCL), sometimes referred to as Batten Disease (www.bdsra.org). Over time, children affected by LINCL suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures and progressive loss of sight and motor skills. Eventually children become blind, bedridden and are unable to communicate. Unfortunately at present, it is always fatal. It usually ends in death between the ages of 8 and 12. This disorder is rare, affecting only about 200 children in the country. It is a recessive genetic disorder, meaning other siblings would have a 25% chance of also having the disorder. In and Around Lake Pontchartrain : The area surrounding Lake Pontchartrain is an eclectic mix of sykscrapers in Metairie, to the vast Bonnet Carre Spillway where the fresh waters of the MIssissippi can be channeled when the river gets too high, to swamps and wildlife refuges along the western and northern borders, and historic old forts that defended the city in the 1800's. It's a place where wildlife and "wild" life play side by side, and the worlds longest bridge spans the 24 mile distance from north to south.
